Abstract

Peri-implantitis following successful integration of an endosseous implant is a major cause of late implant failure. As a destructive inflammatory process that affects the soft and hard tissue around implants, it is caused by pathogenic bacterial challenge into sub-mucosal pocket around implant. After the insertion of implants, rapid colonization of several bacteria is observed at the peri-implant sulcus and implants with clinical signs of peri-implantitis are characterized by a microbiota by high counts and proportions of gram-negative anaerobic bacteria. In this article, we will describe early bacterial colonization on implant surface, microbiota associated with healthy peri-implant tissues and peri-implantitis, and microbiota around implants installed in totally and partially edentulous patients.
